Employment is BLISS!

10 days ago I was offered a job at a hospital about an hour away, and 7 days ago I started! I just LOVE it! The drive wasn't so bad - it's all highway. The people are incredibly nice, and extraordinarily welcoming, so it was a spectacular week. I know I sound gushy for me - but it really was a great week. :-)

We were looking all up and down the east coast for a job. While I'd like to retire somewhere a bit further South, I wasn't really ready to move. And Katie, who just moved in with us, was not thrilled about the prospect of moving either.

The new batch of pups is growing up nicely. A few of them have been suffering from Kennel Cough, which is going around the shows right now. Hard as we try, occasionally the germs find their way to the puppies. Sad to listen to them coughing away. Anyway, hopefully the dog breeding gods will smile on us and give us a little break before we have more puppies - we all need a break!

March musings

Phew – feels like I haven’t much been in touch. A little over a month ago our dear friend and dog handler Andrew suffered a head injury and died – bang, like that. On the day it happened I hurried out to dover PA to be with his close associate and apprentice, Katie (who is from Kansas city – small world). Her mom and his mom arrived and somehow we all got through the week and a memorial service. Katie is a gifted handler and a delightful person, so John and I opened our house to her, and she and the dogs moved here the following week.

Katie arrived with lots of helpers and lots of stuff and we got it all either here or into the public storage garage we rented. Of course, being a dog handler, she brought dogs and all their paraphernalia. So the numbers of dogs here doubled overnight. The beauty of it is that her dogs pretty much knew our dogs and the merger went well, with several groups adjusting to let her dogs in. In the spirit of setting up our little wireless network to accommodate her machines, somehow my computer took a hissy fit and stopped working on the net. Imagine me without e-mail!!!! Luckily the desktop machine worked so I was able to look for jobs, but my links and address book weren’t there – so tonight I did finally succeed in getting it working again and I’m able to sit and COMMUNICATE while I watch TV – I’m so happy! Anyhow, apologies for being out of touch somewhat.

On the job market, I had a phone interview for a position in PA – a bit too far to commute, so we’d have to pack up the dogs, the fish and our stuff and relocate. I have been contacted by a hospital that is in the same health system that recently laid me off, to work at another hospital – I’ll meet with them Friday. That would be a bad commute but wouldn’t require relocation. Another possibility is in Northwest Baltimore, but while they were hot-to-trot back when Andrew was in the hospital, now they’ve slowed down and nothing more has come of it. Frustrating. There are at least 15 Radiology Director positions open in California, but we don’t want to move that far!!!

On the dog market, we have had 2 litters of pups this year and I’m really ready to go back to work!!! LOL. Anyway, one of the girls from the litter born in December has a bad heart valve. They do a cool procedure where they open that with a balloon (versus open heart surgery) so she’ll have that on April fools day, which I think is apropos, considering the lack of income as compared to the cost. The newer litter is just 4 weeks old, which is my favorite age – they are discovering people and are so dear, but not yet biting.

We did go to Jamaica which was planned & paid for last year – sadly, only had one truly sunny day. We swam with the dolphins which was just spectacular – more interactive than the one we’d done in the Bahamas many years ago. Very cool. Our friends bought the video, which he claims he can copy. I hope he can copy it – I’m being pulled by the dolphin and am screaming “this is SOOOOO cool!”

The medical week & a little good stuff

John had his gallbladder out on the 20th. It was a textbook Laparoscopic case, and while he was surprised at the pain post op, (since we all told him it would be a piece of cake compared to an "open" case) he was back on his feet and being pretty normal after 4 or 5 days. Then this week, I was a little under the weather Monday, and by Tuesday had one of the worst GI bugs I've experienced - to the point that I made John take me to the hospital for fluids and compazine and pain meds for the subsequent migraine. I thought I'd gotten food poisoning, but the doctor told me it was going around and was indeed a bad bug. I'm still not hungry, but feel pretty good by comparison with Tuesday!!!

The good stuff:
John had his interview with the AKC rep and his application is now accepted to judge Springers, and I got my applications signed off for Irish Setters and English Cocker Spaniels.

Today we picked up our new little Havanese puppy bitch. Photos asap on the web site. She is adorable, and quite the little pistol. I am going to make sure THIS havanese loves ME best :-)

Finally some action in the job mart!

This week has been much better on the job front! I've had a couple 'head-hunters' contact me, and have also spoken to some consulting firms. I knew nothing would happen until this week, but am breathing a sigh of relief that SOMEthing is happening!
Our pups are growing like weeds - and are going to be clean ones as they scream to get out of the box to do their potty.
This coming weekend is the big Spaniel Club show, where we have several entered. It's only in Valley Forge, so we could drive back and forth, but Springers are in the ring pretty early every day so we'll be staying there.

My First BLOG post

Well, here we are with a new year in front of us - and might I say I sure hope it goes better than this past year!! I look forward to seeing if Barack can save us all from this awful economy that has had me out of work for the second time. I really LIKE to work! We hope something falls into place soon, and are willing now to move - though I find the thought of moving the fish to be a scary thought!

We have a couple projects to complete around the house while I'm waiting to work again, and then we'll truly be ready to put the place on the market if we have to. In the summer, I had about 5 projects to go before we would have had "curb appeal". I'm a new addict of HG-TV, and have started reducing clutter.

The puppies have started moving around and being generally adorable, so that's at least entertaining. ( www.kismetess.com )
